Workshop: Black-and-white Digital Photography II

From October 9, 2014 through October 10, 2014 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at George Eastman House

Even if you’ve stopped shooting black-and-white film or have never set foot in a darkroom, you can make beautiful black-and-white digital prints that have the romantic look of what photography was in the golden years of the 20th century. Participants can choose to attend the basic class offered in Session I, or more the more advanced can opt to take Session II. You can also take both courses in the same week.

Historic Process Specialist Nick Brandreth will help guide you through the following techniques:

Session I (October 7–8)

  • Understanding digital photography
  • Shooting for black and white with your digital camera
  • Camera RAW simplified
  • Basic digital workflow
  • Basic retouching techniques using Photoshop

Session II (October 9–10)

  • Advanced image manipulation techniques using Photoshop
  • Understanding ink sets and printing papers
  • Printing the fine art print

Important: Participants will be required to bring their own digital cameras and laptop computers with Adobe Photoshop CS5 or CS6.

Audience: Limited to eight, this two- or four-day workshop is suitable for art and photography students, educators, advanced fine art photographers, and anyone else interested in learning more about how to set up their digital imaging system to make high-quality black-and-white prints. No experience necessary.

Tuition: $350/$325 members for each session, materials fee $50; $700/$650 members for both sessions, materials fee $100
